Wordle clone Adverswordle lets you set the word and make the AI guess

Tired of Wordle making you feel like an idiot? Then play Adversle, where you get to set the puzzles and the game has to guess.

We’ve already seen one reverse Wordle where the aim of the game is to go as long as you can without guessing the correct word. Now someone has come up with a slightly different take on the idea.

Called Adversary Wordle, or Adverswordle for short (and not Adversle surprisingly), the goal isn’t for you to figure out the answer. In fact, you set the answer and it’s up to your computer opponent to guess it.

As explained in the Wordle subreddit, you think up a word and with each of the computer’s guesses, you mark down which letters are correct and whether they’re in the right spot or not.

Your final score is determined by how many tries it took the computer to get the right answer. We’ve tried it a few times and the best we could manage is six attempts. It even guessed ‘bloke’ and ‘cater’ with little issue.

Don’t bother trying to trick it or cheat, though. The game is designed for the computer to eventually figure your word out, so if you keep changing it or use a made-up word, the game will call you out and give you a score of zero.

Unfortunately, the game can only be played daily at the moment, although you can try it out multiple times like we did, by deleting your cookies. The creator claims to have a high score of 12, so you’ve got something to beat.

The game currently lacks a light/dark mode switch (the background is completely black), but there is a high contrast option and, like Wordle, a share function. It even has Reddit and Discord options that automatically apply spoiler filters.

There have been some concerns that The New York Times will move to take down fan-made Wordle clones, even if they’re free, following the shutdown of the unofficial Wordle archive.

Fortunately, none of them appear to have been affected so far, meaning the trend of endless clones and variants is set to continue for a while longer.
