Will Smith appears ‘confident’ in the future of his brand after his altercation with Chris Rock at the Oscars, according to body language expert Judi James.

The 57-year-old comedian was preparing to present the Academy Award for best documentary as he teased members of the audience, including a joke about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith – who suffers from hair-loss disease alopecia – when he referenced her buzz cut and said he couldn’t wait for ‘G.I. Jane 2’.

The King Richard actor appeared to laugh off the joke at first, but quickly got on stage and struck Chris before returning to his seat and shouting: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth.’

He was later seen beaming and dancing at Vanity Fair’s Oscars party, and expert Judi exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘Jada is there but it is clearly Will’s moment as he faces the party and joins in the dancing.

‘This was no scuttling away with a look of shame, suggesting Will is confident his brand won’t have suffered as a result.’

How did Will’s demeanor change throughout the evening? Let’s take a look…

Judi James says Will Smith went from ‘apologetic to resilient to defiant’

Judi said: ‘Comparing himself to Richard Williams as a ‘fierce defender’ of his family, Will Smith’s emotional responses before, after and during his attack on Chris Rock looked like a powerful show-reel for any roles of any depth that he might be cast for in the following year.

‘He began in classic “good guy” Will mode, throwing some open-mouthed laughs at any comments coming his way from the stage, sitting back in his seat and even performing a slow, exaggerated clapping to suggest approval.

‘He was still laughing when Chris did his line about Jada, although the slight tightness of his jaw suggested he was less congruent in terms of his good humour.

‘Even his hit seemed to come with no credible signs of warning as Chris was still laughing and had his hands clasped behind his back when it landed. It was when Will went into stage two of his emotional display, screaming and swearing from his seat, that people realised that is was genuine anger they were seeing, not some new gag.

‘Will’s [acceptance] speech showed a range of body language from head-down apologetic to resilient to defiant.

‘Tears ran down his face and he pinched and wiped snot from his nose but he also spoke in a dramatic tone with pauses for emphasis as he told the audience he was “overwhelmed by what God is calling me to do and be.” Did he mean his hit on Chris Rock or his apology and words of “love”?

‘His red carpet walk with Jada quietly holding onto his arm suggested a re-boot of confidence and some self-pride. Dancing at the party he looks happy surrounded with admirers, holding his Oscar aloft and accepting high-fives and hugs of what look like love and approval.

‘Jada is there but it is clearly Will’s moment as he faces the party and joins in the dancing. This was no scuttling away with a look of shame, suggesting Will is confident his brand won’t have suffered as a result.’
