  • Wayne Rooney had the best years of his career playing for Manchester United

  • Rooney eventually joined Manchester United aged 18 for £30m in 2004

Wayne Rooney has sensationally claimed he told Sir Alex Ferguson to ‘f*** off’ when the Manchester United manager tried to sign him from Everton when he was just 14.

Rooney would go on and enjoy the finest years of his career at Old Trafford in the red of United but as a young teenager, he only had eyes on his boyhood club Everton.

And he had no qualms about telling someone as authoritative as Ferguson as much, even at such a young age. Rooney told The Sun: ‘Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign me when I was 14. He was on the phone to my mum and dad.

‘They said, “Alex is on the phone, Manchester United want to sign you”. I said, “Tell him to f*** off. I want to play for Everton”.

‘Then as time went on, I knew I had to play for Alex Ferguson. The reason I signed for United was Alex Ferguson.’

Rooney left The Toffees for Old Trafford in a £30m transfer in 2004 when he was just 18 and even then, Ferguson didn’t hold back on how good he thought Rooney would turn out to be.

‘I am very excited. I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years,” he said. ‘Everyone is delighted by this signing.’

At United, Rooney won the Premier League five times and the Champions League once, as well as one FA Cup and two League Cups.

And now Rooney is following Ferguson’s footsteps with his first job in management with Derby County.

The Rams are bottom of the Championship but Rooney has only enhanced his credentials as a coach with the club having been docked 21 points and being forced to sell key players to balance the books.

Had those point deductions not occurred, Rooney’s side would be 17th in the standings.
