Vibrant colours are back on the rack at Brown Thomas as spring-summer collection hits the runway in Dublin

Fashion is always full of contradictions and the upcoming spring-summer season is anything but ordinary.

palette of summer black is big across occasion wear and tailoring, but super bright colours are in the mix too. These range from zesty citrus tones and neons to posh pinks and exceptionally pretty florals from Erdem.

Brown Thomas showcased its SS23 international designer collection yesterday, with a 96-look fashion show that underlined a season of contrasts.

Lengths have dropped so there is more cover-up but on the flip side, there’s lots of sheer transparency with skin reveal.

Victoria Beckham went with sheer silk panels and cut-outs on necklines, while Thierry Mugler’s legs were sheer and his tailored jacket had virtually no back.

The fashion show at Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin city centre opened strongly.

There was a muted gold ombre slip dress by Prada, followed by a draped cream and black dress.

There were gentle ruffles and crinkle fabric in sorbet hues from Dries Van Noten, while Emilia Wickstead delivered a stand-out red-roses coat in taffeta faille, and a matching long, bodycon dress with bandeau neckline.

Pointing to the new trends we might find occupying our wardrobes in the coming months, Shelly Corkery, fashion buying director at Brown Thomas, said: “It is a very diverse season. Femininity is huge, there are more streamlined clothes, longer lengths, cut-outs, transparency and asymmetric hemlines.”

Ms Corkery said we have been through a time of relaxed, easy dressing, but added: “This season, it’s definitely back to more sophisticated fashion – elevated pieces for daywear.

“It is lovely to see people coming out of the pandemic with more of an understanding of what they want to wear.”

The neo-minimalism trend evokes easy tailoring and a soft colour palette, while the soft utility trend wraps around the popular wardrobe favourite from the past, namely cargo pants.

Elements of three key SS23 trends – column dressing, shades of sunset and Grecian goddess draping – could be found in one dress: a dramatic caped maxi from Alex Perry.

The Australian designer is one of the new 17 brands at BT along with The Row, Peter Do, Carolina Herrera and Roland Mouret.

Ms O’Callaghan walked the runway with striking style, her sleek grey hair worn back over the shoulder of the caped gown, which is priced at €2,900.

Swapping the keyboard for the catwalk, she said: “I thought before I turn 50, I wanted to do something new, a change in career.

“I just thought it was time for a new challenge. Modelling came along and I am loving it.”
