Vail Resorts To Pilot App-Based Gear Rental In Colorado Next Ski Season

Vail Resorts is trying out a new gear rental program at its Colorado resorts next season, and it may appeal to those who loathe traveling with their ski boots, feel like they’re missing out on fresh powder while waiting in line at ski gear shops or just want to test out a new snowboard before buying it.

Vail Resorts announced its forthcoming “My Epic Gear” membership program that will let members choose the gear they want to borrow for the full season or the day. While the brands haven’t been announced, inventory will include a selection of popular ski and snowboard models as well as high-quality boots with customized insoles.

The gear rental will be available through an app.

A limited number of Epic Pass Holders will pilot the membership at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone during the 2023-24 ski season.

The program will officially launch ahead of the 2024-25 winter season at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Whistler Blackcomb, Park City Mountain, Crested Butte, Heavenly, Northstar, Stowe, Okemo and Mount Snow and expand to more mountains in the future.

A season membership to My Epic Gear will cost $50, which will enable daily gear for $50 a day. Pricing for children’s gear will be introduced as part of the program’s full launch in the 2024-2025 season.

As part of the program, skiers and snowboarders can have their gear delivered to their lodging if they’re staying in the resort areas or pick it up slopeside at the participating mountain resorts.

Members will get to choose a ski or snowboard model at the beginning of a season, and they’ll be guaranteed that model will be available any day of the season and be fully tuned. But, if they want to try a different model out on other days — think: powder skis right after a snowstorm to navigate fresh deep snow — they’re able to do so based on inventory availability.

My Epic Gear will have 15 different leading brands and more than 50 of the most popular and latest ski and snowboard models available, according to Vail Resorts. The inventory is intended to let guests sample new brands and models of skis and snowboards for different terrains, weather conditions and ski levels. The app will collect guest feedback throughout the season to tailor recommendations for future rentals.

Kirsten Lynch, chief executive officer of Vail Resorts, said in a news release that the traditional model of gear ownership and rental hasn’t changed in decades. This new gear rental program is looking to shake things up.

“Most gear owners have their skis and snowboard sitting idle, untuned, for most of the year, but they want the certainty of having the gear they want when they get on the mountain,” Lynch said in a news release. “My Epic Gear will offer a much lower cost option, without the hassle of transporting, maintaining, or upgrading to the latest models, while still providing the certainty of having the gear they choose when they get on the mountain.”
