When it comes to creating content, MoistCr1tikal can do no wrong. In addition to a massively popular Twitch channel that averages nearly 13,000 concurrent viewers, his twice-daily YouTube uploads net millions of views each covering everything from video game reviews to commentating Russian slapping tournaments (yes, really).
Despite the wide range of his content’s subject matter, speedrunning has remained a consistent topic on Cr1tikal’s streams and videos. Late last year, the YouTuber issued a $10,000 reward split between the gamers who could complete the unknown game Amok Runner fastest by the end of a two week period.
The challenge instantly prompted a speedrunning community to form around the game, inspiring 283 players to submit 653 runs to the official leaderboards as they shared shortcuts and tips to complete the game as fast as possible. By the end of the challenge, dedicated players had discovered precise glitch setups to launch their character across the map and skip large portions of the game.
Following the challenge, Cr1tikal released a comprehensive speedrun history video (seen above) that details the world record progression for Amok Runner, and it’s clear that he had a blast watching as gamers simultaneously competed and cooperated to drive down their times.
Now, Cr1tikal has announced in a new video that he plans on launching two-week speedrunning challenges every month, with $10,000 split between the top three fastest runners, and an additional $1,000 going to whomever finds the “most impactful” glitch for the speedrun, as voted by the community.
This month’s speedrunning challenge battleground is 2008 Sci-Fi first person shooter Exodus from the Earth — a game that only one person has submitted a run for on Speedrun.com. Cr1tikal describes the game as “actual, full-throttle action,” and hopes that the speedrun will implement more optimized movement and combat, rather than the relatively slow-paced Amok Runner.
It’s also clear that Cr1tikal has put a lot of thought into making the challenge accessible by implementing a frames-per-second cap to eliminate advantages from superior (read: expensive) computer hardware, and the aforementioned $1,000 glitch bounty offers a prize to those who may not have the skills or time to compete for the world record themselves.
Speedrunning historian SummoningSalt recently told me that he feels Cr1tikal’s Amok Runner challenge was “great for speedrunning” as a whole, because it allowed many people to “try [speedrunning] and contribute.” While top-tier runners for games like Super Mario 64 compete to shave milliseconds off of routes fine-tuned over years, these speedrunning blitz challenges level the playing field to allow new runners to get involved and immediately start challenging for the world record.
