This Eco-Friendly Sustainable Resort Doesn’t Compromise On Luxury

Hotels around the world are making a push towards sustainability and considering the environmental impact of their actions. Iberostar, a family-owned Spanish hotel chain, is leading the way towards ecotourism without compromising on luxury. They launched Wave of Change in 2017, a movement to protect oceans and improve coastal health, and are continuing to move towards a more responsible tourism model focused on people and the environment.

Iberostar Selection Bávaro created a five-star luxurious Coral Level experience that is a hotel within a hotel. Located on Bávaro Beach in Punta Cana where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, you will never be far from palm trees, the sea, and amenities that come with an upscale all-inclusive experience. When you aren’t keeping busy with fun daily activities, feasting on foods from around the world, or swimming in the relaxing infinity pool, check out their Coral Lab right on site and see for yourself what Iberostar is doing to care for our earth.

Sleep In Luxurious Villas

Coral Level allows guests to experience a higher level of exclusivity within a 5-star resort. Check into your lavish suite via a private reception area and sip your refreshing welcome drink as your worries slip away. The colorful villas are spacious and you can choose from a peaceful garden view, ocean front, suites with pool access, and a junior suite perfect for families with two large bedrooms.

The low buildings camouflaged by towering palm trees consist of 162 rooms with a wide variety of features including a balcony, smart TV, minibar, coffee maker, cozy bathrobe and slippers, free WIFI and even a pillow menu. There is 24-hour concierge service and the friendly staff are kind and helpful. The luxurious villas are bright, modern, and beautifully designed. Sea turtle artwork over your deluxe bed is a reminder Iberostar cares about the oceans.

Splash, Swim, Play, And Workout

In the Coral Level you are steps away from two freshwater pools, Balinese beds, sun loungers, endless cabanas, and umbrellas for shade. There is reef safe sunblock lotion at the towel desk and this attention to detail spans the entire resort. The infinity pool provides spectacular sea views and we spent hours soaking up the warm Punta Cana sun and chatting with guests from around the world. After a swim enjoy a drink from the snack bar (or have one delivered to your cabana). We sipped on decadent freshly made pineapple juice and walked along the beach admiring brave people parasailing. Coral Level guests have access to other pools in the Bávaro complex, sporting facilities, an outdoor gym, a fully equipped indoor gym, tennis courts, and many other fun amenities including their innovative Fit & Fun program. And is it really a vacation without ping pong and a game of chess with massive pieces?

Feast On Delicious Healthy Food

Coral Level guests can access restaurants and bars at Iberostar Selection Bávaro Suites, Iberostar Punta Cana and Iberostar Dominicana hotels. As vegans we were thrilled with the plant-based options spanning the complex and never went hungry. Star Café has soy and almond milk for your daily latte – get it to go and sit in the impressive Bávaro lobby admiring décor from around the world and by local artists such as the magnificent wooden horses and Cayuco boat. Or sit in the peaceful orchid greenhouse among native Caribbean flowers.

We loved Il Forno Italian Restaurant for delicious pizza and pasta dishes; La Dorada Greek Restaurant for vegan versions of typical Greek dishes; and Kabuki Japanese Restaurant was outstanding and featured a teppanyaki and sushi bar. Eat outside to the sounds of ocean waves when dining at El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant and have guacamole prepared right at your table with fresh chips and salsa. The vegan fajitas and battered mushroom tacos with cashew sauce were delicious. We fell in love with El Faro at Coral Level and went daily. We got to know the friendly staff and chatted about life in Punta Cana while dining on fresh fruit, tasty made to order plant-based crepes and pancakes, oatmeal, all sorts of juice, and there is a huge buffet selection. El Faro features international and local dishes with a completely different buffet for lunch, and at dinner you can savor the à la carte market cuisine.

After dinner take a stroll down Caribbean Street and shop for handcrafted souvenirs while supporting locals.

Enjoy Activities, Programs, And Entertainment

Activities include golf, beachfront workouts, running, yoga, spinning, darts, volleyball, aqua fit, salsa dance lessons, bingo, and a water carpet for teens. Iberostar is home to Aliveness, a program offering guests a special opportunity to reconnect body and spirit while engaging with movement. Melt away stress on a nature walk, learn new recipes at cooking classes, or discover a new hobby through one of their unique and creative DIY workshops like art or singing. When the sun goes down, put on your dancing shoes for exciting live and interactive entertainment, themed shows, and international galas.

If traveling with younger kids Star Camp is packed with activities and teaches kids to respect the environment, value diversity, and encourage healthy habits. Aqua Fun is a place for youngsters to slip and slide under the sun and mingle with others their age. For older youth like my son, there is a teen disco at night where they hang out and play video games, basketball, foosball, and catch. Despite the language barrier (Google translate was helpful!) my son made friends from Columbia, Chile and Argentina.

Learn How Iberostar Cares About Sustainability

Sustainability is the driving force behind Iberostar and the heart and soul of what they believe in. With a strong commitment to care for the environment, especially our beautiful oceans, the Wave of Change movement was established. In 2020 all their hotels became single-use plastic free including straws, coffee lids, swapping pens for pencils in rooms, using environmentally conscious laundry bags, replacing plastic mini bar products, using multi-use recyclables in rooms to replace single use toiletries (Products are cruelty-free), and using compostable coffee capsules. You certainly won’t find any single use plastic water bottles here. Guests have access to unlimited purified water with refill stations throughout the resort.

In line with their circular economy model, not only will all Iberostar hotels be waste-free by 2025, but they will be carbon-neutral by 2030. Iberostar has its own composting plant and transforms organic waste from the resort into garden compost. Visit the on-land Coral Reef Laboratory to learn about the importance of coral reefs. Scientists here study the impacts of coral bleaching in the ocean and attempt to rescue damaged coral and learn about climate-resilient reef restoration. Wave of Change also protects mangroves and seagrass and are currently restoring mangroves at the Bávaro resort with the launch of their national mangrove restoration program. Just another reason to go on a nature walk at the resort – simply look for the mangrove signs to see the wonderful work Iberostar is doing to help our earth.
