‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Location Revealed, And It’s Perfect

The White Lotus is headed east for its third season. The globetrotting anthological series has already flown to Hawaii and Italy in its first and second seasons, and now it takes the long flight to Thailand for Season 3.

The news comes by way of Variety:

The White Lotus” is heading to Thailand, multiple sources close to the production tell Variety.

As the first two seasons of Mike White’s “The White Lotus” were shot at Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Italy, respectively, it’s possible that Season 3 will take place at one of the luxury hotel giant’s four properties in Thailand, which are located in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and the Golden Triangle. Thailand’s Four Seasons resorts are spread across the city, country, jungle and beach, giving White plenty of settings to play with, if he so chooses.

HBO declined to comment.

Production on Season 3 has yet to begin, as sources say White has been spending time in Thailand scoping out sites. Casting details have yet to be announced, but as Season 2 featured a primarily new ensemble, it’s safe to assume there will be plenty of fresh faces on vacation in Asia.

Previously, show creator, writer and director Mike White hinted at a Far East season. “The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex,” White said. “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

Season 2 hinted at a possible Asian location as well when some of the guests suggested “Next year, the Maldives!” Thailand seems like a more unique choice since we already had a tropical island season.

I can only imagine the kind of ridiculous rich tourists on vacation in Thailand to get in touch with Eastern spirituality. I’m already enjoying the upcoming season just imagining the possibilities. Of course, money and sex could also loom large in the coming season. Sex, money, death and Eastern religion. Welcome to the White Lotus.

HBO Is Excited About Season 3

Deadline reported recently that HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has been given the rundown for Season 3 by White and likes what he’s heard so far. “He’s just pitched us the idea for the third season, and it’s great, a really fun idea,” Bloys said.

It’s likely—but not certain—that some character or characters from either of the first two seasons will make an appearance in Season 3, though two of the show’s best characters are now dead. A prequel season is also possible, reviving either Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya or Murray Bartlett’s Armond, both of whom are fan-favorites and have expressed interest in returning from the grave. Coolidge is close friends with White, so this seems likely, but I would personally prefer another Armond season. Perhaps we could learn about how he sobered up in the first place.

Whatever the case, I have the utmost faith in White to deliver yet another wonderfully written and produced story full of great satire and delicious twists and turns, peopled with some of the most complex and entertaining characters on TV.

Speaking of complex and entertaining characters, HBO’s other hit show, Succession, just returned for its fourth and final season. You can read my review of that show’s premiere right here.

The White Lotus Season 2 made my Best Shows Of 2022 list. I hadn’t watched Succession yet, but it definitely belongs on that list as well.
