The Unmatched Prussian Inspired Style Of Berlin’s Hotel Luc

A hotel kissed by Prussian influence describes Hotel Luc that’s set in the heart of Berlin. Located in Gendarmenmarkt, a large square in the city that includes the Berlin concert house, and a notable French and German church. Its quaint boutique feel makes the hotel unique, and it’s unlike anything else that you will find in the German capital.

As you enter the hotel from two sets of sliding glass doors, you notice the Prussian blue walls. A major military power form 1701 until 1918, it was an empire that influenced and gave way to a unified Germany. One of its greatest leaders was Frederick the Great, and Hotel Luc is in a way an ode to Frederick. A Marriott Autograph Collection, which means that Hotel Luc is a one-of-a-kind hotel that has something unique that no other Autograph Collection has, and for this hotel it’s the deep Prussian history seen throughout.

Designed by Frankfurt-based architect Oana Rosen, whose work includes the Roomers Hotel in Frankfurt, the Agricultural Bank of China Frankfurt branch, and the Ambassador Ibis hotel in Frankfurt. The gray marble floors compliment the strong blue influences around the hotel. The Prussian blue is everywhere. Accented on the walls, on the sofa in the lobby, upholstered on the chairs at reception, in the restaurant, on vases, and in guest rooms and suites.

Another touch of the hotel are potatoes, which are seen throughout the hotel. There’s even a bowl of potatoes in the lobby. According to the hotel, it was Frederick the Great that brought potatoes to Germany. Germans had never seen the vegetable and didn’t trust it at first. But, slowly and with a few tricks from their leader, the German people opened up to potatoes, which play a major role in German dishes. So, in paintings throughout the hotel, there are women in Prussian era dress holding potatoes.

Prussian history expands further into Frederick’s friendship with French philosopher Voltaire. Both were first students as Schloss Sanssouci (Sanssouci Palace) in Potsdam and Voltaire would give his friend nicknames. But, like any other friendship, the two had their disagreements. According to the hotel, as way to not openly insult Frederick, Voltaire gave him the name Little Luc, and L-u-c backwards is c-u-l, which is French for a**. Hence the name Hotel Luc.

Luc Junior suites accommodate three people with their 506 square meter space. With one king bed there is a mini living room with views of Gendarmenmarkt. The furniture is modern design with rose blush individual chairs and a flat screen TV. With strong Prussian blue on the accent wall that divides the living room from the bedroom, there are also paintings on either side of the bed and a blush pink bench at the foot of the bed. The bathroom is done in a light buttercream color with a walk-in shower and large black sink vanity space.

With a semicircular shape, the Luc King Suite at 1,722 square feet is bi-level and relaxing. Incorporating Prussian elements, the dark blue period color and potato art is present throughout the room. As you enter you notice the bedroom and king bed that faces a slanted window. Spacious with a lot of natural sunlight, the room faces Gendarmenmarkt and leads to the large bathroom with soaking bathtub and double vanity sink. The living room is located downstairs and offers a fun touch with a hanging swing, 3-4-seater sofa, and arm chairs, and desk. The living room leads onto two separate balconies.

At 226 square feet, Little Luc rooms come with a queen bed, desk, sitting chair and flat screen television.

Both the Heritage Berlin restaurant and the Luc restaurant incorporate the design themes found throughout the hotel. Located in the same space the Luc is opened from 6:30am to 3:00pm everyday, while the Heritage Berlin is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 6:00pm until 11pm. The hard wood floors are contrasted with the deep blue chairs and blush pink long circular sofa. The bar has a Marvel theme with a large photograph of Superman and Wonder Woman, which flows in line with the other Heritage restaurants, (Basel, Switzerland and Hamburg, Germany) who also have the super hero them.

The spa and gym are located on the top floor of the hotel. The spa includes a steam room and sauna, sitting deck for relaxation, and a yoga room that leads down to the gym, which is spacious and comes with state of the art work out equipment.

The look and feel of the hotel are the most unique things you’ll first notice. The Prussian blue is relaxing, calming and inviting. The centrality of the hotel in the city also makes it easy to get around Berlin’s major sites with ease.
