This is the amazing moment a taxi driver cheats death when a robber’s knife is deflected by his seat belt.

The 65-year-old driver was taking the 13-year-old boy for a ride in Sungai Petani in Malaysia’s northern state of Kedah.

The two can be seen chatting normally in footage taken from inside the vehicle before the boy reaches over and pulls out a knife in order to take the cash that the man has drawn from his shirt pocket.

Fortunately, the knife struck the taxi driver’s seat belt and he can be seen struggling to fight off the assailant and biting him as the teenager tries to steal the money from his hand.

The boy then leaves the vehicle abruptly and the man shouts at him as he runs off, before putting his t-shirt back in place.

The crazed attack happened at around 6.20pm on Monday.

The suspect had used an e-hailing app to take a ride in a private hire car, Kuala Muda district police chief Zaidy Che Hassan told the Straits Times.

However, during the ride, the suspect then asked to borrow the equivalent of £8.50 from the taxi driver to pay his rent.

The driver said that if the teenager couldn’t pay the fare, he would drop him off on the spot.

However, the boy demanded to be driven home to retrieve the money.

He then tried to extend the ride by directing the driver to take a route using several alleys.

‘The driver eventually dropped off the suspect and requested an additional payment of RM9. But while he was in the midst of returning change for RM20 given by the suspect, the suspect tried to stab him,’ Zaidy said.

The boy then tried to snatch the money from the driver’s pocket, but the 65-year-old managed to take the knife by biting the teenager’s hand.

The driver filed a police report and the teenager was located and arrested at around 10pm, the Straits Times reports.

A 25cm knife was recovered from the victim’s car, according to the newspaper.

‘Investigations found that the teen suspect is the eldest of four siblings and did not come from a problematic background,’ Zaidy said.

‘The boy attacked the driver as he was angry after being scolded by the driver and was trying to claim back his money.’
