He’s been in all ads promoting the upcoming season of Australian Idon and finally, West Aussie Sash Seabourne made his TV debut.
The long-haired surfer made a lasting impressing on the four superstar judges with his rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody during Wednesday’s episode.
“I’m really glad that you did it in your own way,” Australian singer Amy Shark said after the audition.
“This is exactly what I’m looking for. Something refreshing, something exciting, something that’s different from everything we’ve seen,” Kyle Sandilands added.
The 25-year-old, who grew up in Margaret River but now lives in Fremantle, said it was “wild” to be in a room with people like Kyle Sandilands and Meghan Trainor.
“I‘ll be honest, I was kind of preparing myself to get bullied by Kyle but he was really stoked about what I was doing. Every single one of the judges has had wonderful encouraging things to say and some healthy, positive criticisms to work on as well,” Seabourne told Perth Now.
“It’s like a strange dream.”
His audition also had fans raving about the unique twist he threw on the 80’s dance hit. Seaborne’s advice for anyone trying to make a famous song their own, is to take ownership of their individuality.
“I think the most important part of being in this great opportunity that I have, is staying authentic and doing something that’s honest and true to myself. I think if you’re truly authentic to the individual that you are, it will always sound unique.”
It’s been a whirlwind couple of months for Seabourne who has been one of the shining stars in the Channel 7 commercial ad promoting the return of Idol after more than a decade off the air.
The musician, who once lived with members of Spacey Jane, said he’s been approached by a lot of older women who have recognised him from the ads.
“Honestly, it’s been surreal…seeing my face on Channel Seven Instagram next to Prince Harry was kind of like a ‘pinch me’ moment but I have adjusted to it in the last couple of weeks and at the end of the day, I’ve always wanted to be a musician and I’ve been preparing for this. So I’m just very happy to be here,” he added.
Seabourne had the support of his dad at the auditions, who he said had taught him how to play the guitar from an early age.
The duo have been enjoying the singer’s successes.
“We’ve had a really close relationship in the last couple of months and we’ve been jamming…and just tripping out. I think he is kind of living his dream for me at the moment,” he laughed.
“I feel like a very unlikely story to be experiencing success, a bit of an underdog if you will, but I think it just shows that if you commit to something that you’re passionate about and put your life into it, you can achieve anything.”
Australian Idol continues on Sunday on Seven and 7Plus.
