PETA Compares ‘The Rings Of Power’ Producers To Orcs After Horse Dies On Set

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals—aka PETA—has a new target: Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show The Rings Of Power. Amazon revealed that a horse suffered cardiac arrest on March 21st ahead of rehearsals on the production.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a production horse died on 21st March,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “The incident took place in the morning whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals. The trainer was not in costume and filming had yet to commence. Both a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time. The independent necropsy has confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure.”

According to Variety, sources have told the publication that more than 30 horses were being used on the day the incident occurred (the entirety of the Númenorean cavalry, it would seem) and the horse died while standing with around 20 other horses. It is unclear what caused this horse to suffer a heart attack. This hasn’t stopped PETA from leaping to conclusions:

“It seems that living underground with the orcs is par for the course for the producers of ‘The Rings of Power,’ because they have the option to use CGI, mechanical rigs and other humane methods that wouldn’t run vulnerable horses to death on set,” PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange wrote in a statement to Variety. “PETA is calling on the show’s creators — and all other producers — to take on a new quest without using any real horses. If they can’t avoid exploiting animals for their art, they should find a new medium, because no one wants to see a spinoff for TV with torment as the theme.”

This incident brings back memories of a far more egregious case of 27 animals dying during the shooting of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. However, these animals died on a farm where they were being housed rather than on-set.

Obviously it’s terrible that a horse died during the filming of Amazon’s fantasy show. Worse than Isildur not sharing his apple with his horse, Berek, even. But I suppose these things happen. It sounds as though Amazon took the proper steps, with a veterinarian and a rep from the American Humane Association there to ensure that the animals were being treated properly. Sometimes animals—including people—have a bad ticker. Unless these horses were being put under extreme or negligent conditions, there’s not much to be done or said. It is not at all simple to use CGI to create horses that real people ride on, or to use mechanical rigs. Real horses are used in countless films and have been since the advent of cinema. This is unlikely to ever change, though we can always push for better conditions for animals and people.

The problem with PETA is the organization has become almost a parody of itself at this point. The strident language—accusing the producers of “living underground with the orcs”—just makes PETA and its activists look bad and come across as silly extremists rather than well-meaning advocates for the safety of animals. Sometimes being as extreme as possible might feel good, but good feelings don’t always translate into good results.
