Perth Royal Show: Annual family event opens at Claremont Showgrounds with duck races a hit among crowds

WA’s biggest agricultural fair is known for its variety of animals but ducks stole the show at the 2023 Perth Royal Show.

It was perfect weather on the first day of the Royal Show with thousands of people coming through the gates to get a show bag, enjoy some rides, and pet some cuddly animals.

The unusual attraction of duck races drew a huge crowd with kids cheering for their favourite one as they raced around the course.

The Gilmore family, who run Comedy Races, travelled across the Nullarbor for the show and were pleased by the turnout.

“Ducks have flock attitudes so they’re unpredictable, sometimes they don’t want to race,” they said.

But they were in the racing mood on opening day with Jake Penno’s (6) duck flying through the finish line first.

He got to take a toy duck of his own home for winning.

“My duck won. I won the prize,” he said.

He said his favourite part of the Royal Show was also getting showbags and going on rides like the Splash Down.

His dad Angus Penno said the family came to the show every year.

“Jake woke up early because he was so excited. It’s a highlight for the kids,” he said.

Premier Roger Cook officially opened the show on Saturday recalling his own early memories of attending with his grandparents.

He was also devastated about the lack of Bertie Beetle show bags at this year’s show.
