‘Overwatch 2’ Will Get Better Custom Modes In Season 3 As The Workshop Is Returning

One of the best modes in Overwatch is finally returning. The Workshop will once again be available after Season 3 of Overwatch 2 gets underway.

While discussing some of the upcoming changes and the state of the game on SVB’s The Group Up! Podcast, Overwatch commercial lead and vice-president Jon Spector confirmed that the Workshop will make a comeback in Season 3. There are some valid reasons why the Workshop has been out of commission since Overwatch 2 launched in October.

“We wanted to make sure we had good moderation and reporting tools in place for the updated version,” Overwatch executive producer Jared Neuss said on SVB’s stream. “We know that it’s frustrating for people. As in any game, this is usually a really small, very dedicated group of folks who create stuff that a bunch of people get to enjoy, and so we want to support them.”

Spector and Neuss suggested that the team could have been a bit more forthcoming about the reintroduction of the Workshop. “The feature’s been planned for a while,” Neuss added. “We hope everyone enjoys it. We’ll be keeping an eye [on it] to make sure that we can keep moderation tight. If bad stuff crops up, we’ll take it down until we get to the point where we have a really thriving Workshop community again.”

The pair didn’t say exactly when the Workshop will return — if it’ll be at the start of Season 3 next week or through a mid-season update. Team 4 has been providing a string of updates about Season 3 this week, so we should find out more Workshop details soon.

I’m stoked that the Workshop is finally coming back. It offers much more in-depth tools for creators to craft custom game modes with, beyond the custom game feature that’s in Overwatch 2 right now. I’m mainly excited to play a bunch of Clone Wars again.

I wish I had time to learn the ins and outs of the Workshop so I could build custom modes myself. But I can’t wait to see what the community comes up with, especially if they have new options to work with. We’ve seen some rad Workshop modes in the past, including some that have inspired Arcade modes in the main game.

I might be jumping the gun here, but if you’re a Workshop creator and create an awesome custom mode, let me know! I’d love to check it out and maybe even write about it, as I’ve done in the past.

Meanwhile, there are a lot of other changes on the way in Season 3, including a Ramattra nerf. It’ll be easier for players to unlock old skins too. Until then, you’ll be able to chip away at the remaining levels on your Battle Pass faster as Blizzard has switched on double match XP until Monday.
