The developers behind the beloved gaming franchise Dead Space have sought to recreate the immersive environments they experience in feature films. In a recent interview with IGN, members of the EA Motive team describe how advances in technology allow Dead Space Remake to be more terrifying and immersive than the 2008 original.


Dead Space was heavily inspired by science-fiction horror films like Aliens and Event Horizon. When EA Motive set out to recreate cinematic atmospheres 14 years ago, they found that technical limitations held them back. Now, the developers have detailed how advances in AI, graphics processing, and even storage have all converged to create the ultimate tools for crafting unsettling atmospheres and terrifying thrills. Considering the impressive footage of the USG Ishimura that was recently released, it’s clear Dead Space Remake is far more than a point-for-point rebranding of the original.

According to the developers, the core of Dead Space is its atmosphere and the new Frostbite engine has allowed them to mimic reality while infusing the world with minute details that generate real tension. Advances in computing allowed the development team to create a full-fledged starship, one that players can explore and backtrack within, rather than simply offering a series of levels. The newly unveiled intensify director system uses AI advances to measure your progress and ensure that continuous actions occur that will genuinely frighten the player.

The studio has employed new VFX technology that allows Dead Space’s cinematic tone to be heightened while replicating what fans loved about the original. A recent gameplay trailer showcased the peeling system which wraps necromorphs in layers of flesh, bone, and tendon that can break and tear in a variety of dramatic ways, cranking up both gore and realism. The advances in software and computing power over the years have allowed the team to embed the game with a host of environmental triggers, allowing lighting, sound, and level design to contribute to organic terror.
