Most powerful cars and SUVs in India under Rs 10 lakh: Hyundai i20 to Tata Nexon

A few years back, only a handful of manufacturers in India focused on outright performance or offering powerful engines with their respective offerings. However, the newer and more stringent emission norms have forced manufacturers to downsize their engines, which resulted in almost all car companies introducing turbochargers for some of their relatively affordable cars.
Moreover, the market demand has changed over the years, and even affordable car buyers want a bang for their buck. Nonetheless, even under a strict budget, you can purchase a host of powerful, fun-to-drive cars in the Indian market today. Here is a list of the top 5 most powerful cars and SUVs that are available in the country under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), take a look –
Hyundai i20 and Hyundai i20 N Line (120 PS/172 Nm)
The Hyundai i20’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol TGDi engine makes it one of the most powerful cars in the Indian market under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), and the most powerful car in its segment. This engine puts out 120 PS of max power and 172 Nm of peak torque, and is available with a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) as well as an optional 7-speed DCT.

The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine on the i20 can be had from the Sportz Turbo iMT variant onwards, with a base price of Rs 8.79 lakh (ex-showroom). Moreover, the sportier i20 N Line is also available with the same engine, and the N6 iMT variant of the performance-oriented hatchback can be purchased under the given budget.
Kia Sonet (120 PS/172 Nm)
The Sonet is currently Kia’s most affordable offering in India, and just like the aforementioned Hyundai i20, is available with three engine options, including a 1.2-litre NA petrol motor, a 1.5-litre diesel engine, as well as the 1.0-litre TGDi turbo petrol unit.

Priced at Rs 9.99 lakh, the HTK Plus Turbo iMT is currently the only variant of the Sonet which comes with the turbo-petrol engine, and is available under Rs 10 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom). This engine makes the Kia Sonet one of the most powerful sub-compact SUVs in the country.
Tata Nexon (120 PS/170 Nm)
The Tata Nexon is offered with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine putting out 120 PS and 170 Nm, as well as a 1.5-litre diesel engine rated at 110 PS/260 Nm. The former is available with a 6-speed MT along with an optional 6-speed AT, and qualifies the sub-4m SUV to be on this list.

Pricing for the Tata Nexon petrol starts from Rs 7.55 lakh (ex-showroom) for the entry-level XE variant, which actually makes it the cheapest car in India to be offered with a turbocharged petrol engine.
Honda City 4th Gen (119 PS/145 Nm)
Despite the launch of the 5th Gen City and the imminent launch of the City Hybrid e:HEV later this month, Honda continues to retail the previous-gen version of the sedan alongside. Currently available in two variants, the 4th Gen City is offered with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 119 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque.

The 4th Gen City can only be had with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The SV MT variant is currently priced at Rs 9,29,900, while the V MT trim is being retailed at Rs 9,99,900 (both prices, ex-showroom). The Honda City is the only car on this list to be offered with a naturally aspirated engine.
Mahindra XUV300
The Mahindra XUV300 is the only diesel-powered car in this list. While the sub-compact SUV gets a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 110 PS and 200 Nm, it’s the 1.5-litre diesel motor (117 PS/300 Nm) that makes it one of the most powerful cars in India under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

As of now, the entry-level W4 trim, priced at Rs 9.60 lakh (ex-showroom) is the only XUV300 diesel variant that is offered under an ex-showroom price of Rs 10 lakh. It comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard.
