Postecoglou acknowledged that Tottenham have been too reliant on Kane in the past and that other players may step out of his shadow, while being careful to stress that the 30-year-old’s contribution could not be viewed as anything but positive despite the lack of team success.
“There wouldn’t be a manager in the Premier League or the world that wouldn’t want Harry Kane in their team,” said Postecoglou. “That’s the reality of it. So you can’t say that because he’s here that’s sort of stymied the club in having success – I just don’t buy into that. I just think he’s done his utmost to try to have success at this football club and it hasn’t worked for him for a number of reasons.
“What we do know about this game – it’s very, very, very rare that an individual will be the difference. It’s usually the collective, so what that offers now is an opportunity to build a collective that brings us success and within that context you still want outstanding individuals – you still want the best players, that doesn’t change.
“There is sometimes that element where people oppress themselves to an extent because they understand that there is a unique individual in the room that has such great presence and is such a force on and off the field. Having that space there maybe does (free others). But there’s no guarantee it does either. The opportunity is there, put it that way. With all these things there’s opportunity.
“What you’ve got to try to do is what the great clubs do, the great organisations – replace greatness with greatness. How that comes about is not easy, but that’s what the big clubs do. They find a way to sustain and maintain and grow even when the greatest leave their doors.”

Returning to the theme of Tottenham’s supporters, Postecoglou believes it will be the actions of his team, and not the 57-year-old’s words that can speed up the healing process.
“I’m not going to tell them how to feel,” said Postecoglou. “They need to go through that process themselves and I guess for me and the players what’s really important now is that when they see their team play that fills them with hope and potential that we can build something they’re going to be proud of.
“So I’m just really reluctant to tell people how they should feel. If they’re not feeling great about things, then that’s their right. There’s probably a reason for that and a good reason for that.
“What I want to do is, hopefully, give them something tangible on the field that excites them and if we do that then they’ll find their own way to get to the point where we’re all united and feeling good about the prospects of the football club.”
