Citroen’s first sensibly sized all-electric car is under £30k and delivers what the vast majority of would-be EV buyers need to park their petrol engine for good.

While its fussy melted looks are somewhat polarising, spend a little time on the road behind the wheel and I’ll wager you’ll consider converting.

With a perfect world range of 219 miles (allow for a bit less, of course, in the real world) and able to take a rapid 100kW full charge in about an hour (or seven hours from a 7kW home wallbox), its vital stats stack up nicely.

It’s not super quick off the line like some EVs but speed is cheap in the electric car world and also quite redundant in the family car sector.

The e-C4’s top speed is only 93mph and it does 0-62mph in a nothing-to-shout-about nine seconds, but it always feels brisk enough thanks to its near instant torque delivery.

Steering is light yet precise enough and you won’t feel the need to explore its handling limitations, even having switched to Sport mode.

It’s just not that kind of car.

It’s a comfy car. A very comfy car.

And especially when combined with the silence of an EV it results in a notably relaxing driving experience.

There are USB and USB-C ports wherever you sit in the neatly designed yet austerely toned interior but the front passenger gets an optional bonus treat in the form of a uniquely cool, slide-out mount to hook their iPad onto.

While the well-equipped entry-level Sense trim is loaded with all the safety kit you hope you’ll never need, the upgraded Shine Plus, for a few grand more, bundles wireless charging, heated vegan leatherette seats, and head-up display.

A bit pricey compared with the base petrol C4 that costs £22k but excellent value compared with rival EVs.

Citroen’s first serious one-size-fits-all electric car is worth considering as a comfortable gateway to zero-emission ownership.
