How To Get Cosmetic Outfits & Weapon Skins

Warhammer 40K: Darktide gives players a lot more customization options compared to Fatshark’s previous titles. For one, you can fully customize your character’s appearance and even choose their background and planet of origin. However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg because the game also offers a wide variety of cosmetic items to choose from.

There are a number of ways to acquire cosmetics in Warhammer 40K: Darktide, some more time-consuming than others. Most of Darktide’s cosmetic items can be purchased with in-game currency, but there are some that require you spend real-world money. In addition, you can unlock certain cosmetics without having to spend any sort of currency, although they do demand a significant time investment instead.

How To Unlock Free Cosmetics

You can unlock a number of free cosmetics simply by playing the game and completing Penances, optional challenges that work more or less like traditional achievements. Some Penances are very simple and will reward you with cosmetics upon reaching certain level thresholds. Here are the items you’ll unlock at each threshold:

  • Trust Level 5: Torso armor
  • Trust Level 10: Leg armor
  • Trust Level 15: Stance
  • Trust Level 20: Torso armor
  • Trust Level 25: Leg armor
  • Trust Level 30: Stance

Additionally, there are a bunch of other Penances that reward more interesting items, but they are generally significantly more difficult to complete. For instance, Ogryn Skullbreakers have a Penance that requires them to kill a Corruptor by hitting it in the eye with a grenade box. Meanwhile, Veteran Sharpshooters have a Penance that requires them to complete a mission on Malice Threat or higher without taking any melee damage.

Free head armor is particularly difficult to obtain in Darktide. Well, excluding the free basic helmets everyone got for participating in the Beta. But if you want something a bit more interesting than that, you’ll need to work hard for it by completing five specific Penances associated with a certain class. Aside from character skins, completing Penances can also reward you with portrait frames, insignias, and trinkets.

If you’re not a big fan of achievements and want an easier way to acquire cosmetics, you can simply visit the Armoury Exchange instead. The Armoury Exchange becomes available at Trust Level 2 and can be found in the left section of the Mourningstar. That’s the same place you would go to buy weapons and Curios once you’ve saved up enough Ordo Dockets.

If you have an excess of cash, you can use it to buy both character skins and weapon skins at the Armoury Exchange. The prices are generally pretty reasonable, but the cosmetics aren’t very exciting. They’re mostly just different color variations of the same skins. Still, some of them do look pretty nice.

Warhammer 40K: Darktide in-game cash shop

The developers got into some hot water after scrambling to launch the cash shop on day one and making some questionable decisions regarding the premium currency bundles. Controversies aside, if you’re looking for some unique cosmetics for your characters and weapons, this is where you’re going to find them. It’s worth noting that items found in the cash shop rotate on a weekly basis and may or may not return to the store once they’re gone. Make of that what you will.

On the off chance you want to spend even more of your hard-earned money on virtual items, there’s also the Warhammer 40K: Darktide Imperial Edition. The Imperial Edition comes with a number of cosmetics, including backpacks, weapon skins, and a full outfit for every class. You also get 2,500 Aquilas (premium currency) that you can use to buy items from the cash shop.
