Hawkes hope Remarque can finally fulfil his talent

Remarque is a $4.80 chance as he takes on resuming Everest winner Giga Kick and two-time Challenge Stakes winner Eduardo, who hold the Randwick 1000m course record.

“We expect him to run well and it will set up the preparation that we have planned for him including The Galaxy,” Hawkes said.

The Hawkes stable has reputation for getting the most from young talent, be it equine or human, and later in the day, they put their faith in Lloyd on Electric Girl in the Canterbury Stakes.

The rise of the teenager has been quick but not without its hurdles of several suspensions since joining Godolphin as their apprentice, but the Hawkes stable were quick to support him when he arrived in Sydney.

“It has come very quick for him, and one reason is he has the talent,” Hawkes said. “But without the right attitude that doesn’t mean much.

“He has some great mentors in Darren Beadman and his father Jeff and dad [John] talks to him before and after he rides our horses and most importantly he listens.

“He is only going to get better in the next couple of years and he will be riding in group 1 races for a long time.”

John Hawkes has helped shaped the careers of Beadman, Tommy Berry and James McDonald with a no-nonsense approach that few can handle. It’s why Beadman asked him to help with Lloyd’s development.

But there is nothing given at the Hawkes stable and Lloyd earned his group 1 chance on Electric Girl with a perfect ride to win the Millie Fox Stakes first-up.

“I told him before that race to be patient, and he did that and let the race come to him,” Hawkes said. “He is young and wants to make things happen sometimes, so it was good to see him do that.

“It was the perfect ride and he got the result because he didn’t rush and waited until the straight to let her go as we discussed, and she was there for him.

“She is a very honest horse that needs a hard track to be at her best and when she gets those conditions she can do what she did last time.”

Electric Girl has had support into $8.50 in the Canterbury Stakes to be fourth pick in betting behind New Zealand star Imperatiz, Golden Mile and Artorius.

“This is a tougher race than last time but she will enjoy the extra pressure. You know where she is going to be in the run and she will give herself every chance,” Hawkes said.

“Zac will just have to ride her like last time and we will find out if she is good enough.”
