Easily Netflix’s biggest success story of 2023 so far has been the return of Ginny and Georgia for season 2, which has seemingly blown away the initial viewership of season 1, and planted itself as #1 in the top 10 list for nearly the entire month of January.
Now in early February, Ginny and Georgia has been dethroned from the top spot for only the second time overall. The first time it was by That ‘90s Show, the return of the famed sitcom, which has slid to #10 by now. Ginny and Georgia, meanwhile, has been unseated by a rarity, a non-Netflix original series, New Amsterdam.
New Amsterdam, the medical drama, has been hovering around the top 5 for a while now, as the fourth season just hit Netflix after first airing on NBC. It’s a rare show that Netflix still has a full-on licensing deal with, similar to how it gets new seasons of shows like The Walking Dead after they air. I’m sure NBC would love for New Amsterdam to be airing on their own service, Peacock, but who knows how long the current Netflix deal is in place.
I feel like New Amsterdam being the show to finally knock Ginny and Georgia off the top spot is not great news for Lockwood and Co, the supernatural YA drama that debuted at #2, but has now fallen at #3 after New Amsterdam’s rise. It sucks to say it, but I am highly skeptical of any Netflix show that does not hit number one eventually getting a second season, unless it’s some ultra low-budget reality series. And even then, that’s still not a guarantee.
Other newcomers are On My Block: Freeridge and The Snow Girl. Wednesday is still in the top 10 at #7, a wild performance since its debut all the way back in November. It may be approaching a record for the most overall time spent in the top 10, but I’d have to do some further digging on that.
As for Ginny and Georgia, a third season is absolutely guaranteed, even if Netflix has not confirmed one yet. It usually takes just over a month for Netflix to greenlight new seasons, even for hugely popular shows, and we are approaching that point for Ginny and Georgia, so I would expect to hear something soon. I do not expect New Amsterdam to last long at #1, and Lockwood and Co. fans may want to consider a rewatch to boost it, if they want it renewed for season 2.
