Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo Is A 1,300hp Racer From The Future

To round up its 75th birthday celebrations, Ferrari has done something few septuagenarians would ever consider – revealed a thousand-horsepower concept exclusively for Gran Turismo.

Ferrari is far from the first manufacturer to design a concept race car for the Gran Turismo video game, but a new Ferrari is still something to be excited about, even if it’s made from pixels instead of carbon. That said, a full-size physical model will be displayed at the Ferrari museum in Maranello, Italy from 15 December until March 2023.

Called the Vision Gran Turismo, the car is designed to inspire future generations by appealing to young gamers, but it also, the Italian firm says, “represents a futuristic design manifesto for Ferrari’s road and racing cars, embodying the maximum expression of formal beauty and innovation, and providing a stimulus for both the engineers and drivers (real and virtual) of tomorrow.”

So, while the car isn’t going to appear at Le Mans any time soon, some of the design flare could one day make its way onto a real-world racer. And it seems ferrari is pretty serious about this, as the car’s key design detail – how airflow is directed front the front underbody, around the cockpit and over the sidepods – has been patented. It’s a design that makes the body appear to float over the flat, carbon underbody.

The car takes inspiration from sports prototype racers of the 1960s and ‘70s, Ferrari says, like the 330 P3 and 512 S. The car is intended to have geometric, sharp, angular lines, but which produce an organic shape, the company says. Ferrari also claims the car offers a “tantalizing glimpse of the future evolution of closed-wheel racing cars.”

Power comes from a mid-mounted, three-liter, turbo-charged V6 engine – an evolution of that fitted to the real-world 296 GTB and the 499P racer that will see Ferrari’s return to the top class of Le Mans in 2023. For the Gran Turismo concept, the engine is mated to three electric motors; two at the front to create all-wheel-drive, and one on the rear axle. Total power output is around 1,300 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 811 lbs-ft of torque – substantial, given the 2,755 lbs dry weight.

Performance statistics include a 0-62 mph (100km/h) time of under two seconds, a 0-124 mph (200 km/h) time of under five seconds, a top speed of over 217 mph and a lap time around ferrari’s Fiorano test track of under 1min10 – nine seconds faster than Ferrari’s current street-legal record holder, the SF 90.

Ferrari says it worked with Gran Turismo’s developers to create a sound that is “faithfully reproduced to give sim racers an ever more realistic racing experience.”

The car features an electric boost and kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), like that used in Formula One. The car will be available to purchase in Gran Turismo 7 from 23 December.
