Expensive perfume smell on a budget with Perth natural fragrance business Nostalgia


They say the smell of an aroma can be the first thing to trigger fond memories of the past and an Applecross entrepreneur is using her love of perfumes to create natural duplicates of some of the world’s most popular— and nostalgic — fragrances.

After more than a decade in the fashion industry, Shereen Huber decided to step into the beauty realm earlier this year with her brand Nostalgia after she discovered the power of aromatherapy during COVID-19.

“I was doing a lot of that stuff with the kids, trying to get them to learn how to meditate and get all of us mentally in a good place with everything that was going on and I found that (aromatherapy) worked so well,” Ms Huber said.

“And of course, like most women, I love perfumes and scents, so that was where the idea of Nostalgia was sort of born out of.”

Ms Huber took her love of Le Labo’s perfume Santal 33 — which retails for $320 online — and decided to naturally replicate the famous scent.

“I was obsessed with it and I thought there had to be a way that we could make it into a natural sort of scent, because you go through those bottles so fast and it’s so expensive,” she said.

“I wanted to do something that was clean, so good for the environment and for your body and then to create something that was accessible to everyone, rather than the one per cent which a lot of these perfumes are.

“Some of the dupes that we do — the original perfume could be, you know, $500 to $600 for a bottle.

“The idea of not being able to wear your favourite perfume every day is just so frustrating to me. You’re paying that much for it and you’re probably only going to wear it for special occasions instead of on a daily basis, which I think is a bit of a shame.”

The Santal 33 dupe she was able to create called Boujee sells for $34.95 alongside dupes from Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani and YSL.

Ms Huber said that while the idea behind Nostalgia was to create a scent similar to what many know and love, the ingredients in her perfumes set her brand apart from the boutique originals.

“If you go and buy perfumes from BYREDO or Chanel or Dior … all the traditional perfumes are comprised of 90 to 95 per cent alcohol,” she said.

“The base of their perfume is 100 per cent different to ours because we use oils sourced both locally and from France.

“People are becoming more conscious of what they’re putting in their body and on their body, so I think having something that people know is good to use (that reminds them) of their favourite scents, or ones they have wanted try but haven’t been able to afford, has worked really well.”
