- O’Donnell fears the combative Langer is on the verge of tarnishing his legacy
- Langer felt he was forced out the role by Pat Cummins and ‘coward’ teammates
Australian cricket great Simon O’Donnell believes Justin Langer needs to be more dignified after he slammed skipper Pat Cummins and other ‘cowards’ who forced him out of the role.
Speaking on SEN Breakfast on Thursday, O’Donnell said Langer’s legacy will be tarnished in the sport if the former opening batsman continues to make his gripes public.
In February, Langer announced his resignation as head coach of the Australia men’s team.
His contract was set to expire in June, but he turned down a six-month extension offered by Cricket Australia.
‘Unfortunately he [Langer] hasn’t ridden off into the sunset, waved goodbye and enjoyed all he’s achieved,’ O’Donnell told listeners on Thursday.

Langer didn’t mince his words on former AFL player Will Schofield’s Backchat Podcast
‘That’s the ugly side of this. He’s got to be really careful not to lose the room.
‘At the end of the day, the game is bigger than the individual.
‘I’d like him to stop and if he needs to do anything about it, I think he needs to go through other channels rather than just letting fly on podcasts or news services.’
O’Donnell then added: ‘You can’t just carry these grudges forever. You’ve got to move on and it’s taking him a while to move on.
‘I love Justin Langer, I love what he did for Australian cricket, but Justin wasn’t sacked. Justin was offered a six-month extension to his contract which he didn’t agree with.’
Cummins (pictured, with partner Becky Boston) reportedly told Langer the feedback from disgruntled players was going to be ‘brutally honest’
Langer called out Cummins and others ‘coward’ members of the Australian team on former AFL player Will Schofield’s Backchat Podcast.
He spoke of his controversial departure as Australia coach and how it fell apart in his eyes.
‘I spoke to Pat Cummins. He said to me about five times, ‘This might be brutally honest’,’ Langer said.
‘I said, ‘Pat, there is nothing brutal about your feedback. What is brutal is I’m hearing it behind my back through the media or through ‘sources.’
‘No one’s telling me. Tell me. ‘People say that I’m very intense, but they are mistaking intensity with honesty.’
Justin Langer quit as Australia’s coach in February this year after Cricket Australia only offered him a short-term extension, with most of the players saying his coaching style was ‘too intense’
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley strongly refutes Langer’s version of events, saying there are a ‘number of inaccuracies’
Langer wasn’t finished yet, adding: ‘I’ve never said this publicly, the hardest thing for me of it all was I the feedback,’ he said.
‘Then I did something about it, we won the T20 World Cup, we won the Ashes, we were the no.1 in the world, I’ve never enjoyed coaching more and I still got sacked.
‘That’s the hardest thing.’
Langer is tipped to work for Channel 7 this summer as part of their cricket coverage for series against the West Indies and South Africa.
Australia’s test stars have been informed they won’t have to chat to their former coach.
