CA coach offered teen spot on team for sex, court docs say

SALINAS, Calif. — A criminal complaint against a Salinas youth soccer coach is revealing new details about the coach accused of sexually assaulting young girls, among the allegations the coach offered a spot on a soccer team in exchange for sex.

According to an amended complaint filed Dec. 6 against North Salinas High School soccer coach Julio Gonzalez-Garcia, seven Jane Does have now been identified and 34 counts filed against him.

The charges include; lewd acts on a minor, child molesting, forcible rape, sexual battery, sexual penetration, oral copulation, false imprisonment, sending harmful matter to a minor, contacting a minor with the intent to have sex and supplying minors with marijuana.

According to the criminal complaint, the 35-year-old coach in one case “sent a message via social media asking for sex in exchange for getting her on the soccer team.” The message was sent to a 14-year-old girl.

However, the complaint doesn’t name what school the team belonged to but besides coaching at North Salinas High School, Gonzalez-Garcia also coached soccer at La Paz Middle School and with El Camino Fútbol Club, a traveling team in Monterey County.

The soccer coach, in another incident, is accused of sending Jane Doe 3 a selfie “depicting himself in the shower and his penis,” the complaint reads.

In another instance, involving Jane Doe 7, the coach is accused of “rubbing her leg up to her upper thigh under the ruse of treating an injury.”

At least one of the alleged sex acts took place in an equipment room, but other acts took place in the defendant’s car at McKinnon Park, El Dorado Park and in the Monte Bella neighborhood, court documents say.

Gonzalez-Garcia has also been charged with several counts of supplying minors with marijuana products that included vape pens, edibles and a joint.

Some of the alleged crimes date back to September 2019 but most recently as the summer of 2021.

Salinas police say the coach may have more victims.

“We’re still asking the community to come forward if there’s any more victims. He was involved in numerous community teams so he’s been around kids in the area,” said Brian Johnson, a Salinas Police Department spokesperson “We’d like to have a few more come forward if at all possible if you were a victim from this.”

If convicted of all charges, the accused sex offender faces 15 years to life in prison. He’s currently being held in the Monterey County Jail on a $200,000 bail hold.
