Borderlands 3’s Katagawa Ball Has Broken And Bankrupted Me

What makes a boss in a video game both frustrating and memorable? It could be their size and speed, their variety of attacks, the design of their levels, and myriad other things. In the case of Borderlands 3’s Katagawa Ball, it is all of the above along with a massive health bar. Borderlands 3 is great up until this hellscape of a firefight, but that damn ball is the reason why I’m yet to beat the game.

I bought Borderlands 3 at launch, and still have not beaten the ball. I have tried using Moze and her Iron Bear Mech to beat it – no luck. I am currently trying to beat it as Fl4k, and while I have been able to deal more damage with him, I’m still failing and I want to catapult the game into the sun. All because of one stupid boss.

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAY

Dear Gearbox, why do you hate me so?

I know I’m not the only one who has had issues defeating this nightmare invention. There are tons of YouTube videos with different strategies and ways you can beat it, but so far I’ve been crushed by the ball so many times that it’s driven me to in-game bankruptcy due to the endless revives. I hide behind a crate, and next thing I know I’m at death’s door due to shrapnel. I haven’t had this much difficulty beating a boss since Lord Fredrik, The Snowmad King from Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze.

This dear readers, is a call to arms (all the more urgent since I only have one arm). I need your help in defeating this abomination and floating orb of pain and aggravation. I’m playing through the campaign as Fl4k and have really been enjoying his beasts, which have aided me through multiple challenges.

By aiding me with this boss, you can help me get off Skywell-27, where I have been for the past 87 years.

Currently in my inventory, I have a Binary Shockwave rifle, a Double-Penetrating Potent Kielbasa that has an item score of 192, and a legendary pistol, the Shocking AAA. I also have a Strawman Front Loader shield, and Amplified Exploder grenades which offer +15% damage for each enemy damaged. I also have four weapons in my backpack but they’ve not got the job done either. As far as my action skills go, I have almost filled out the Master skill tree and have maxed out my pet’s ferocity which allows my pets to deal out 50% more damage.

Fl4k’s Persistence Hunter ability increases my gun damage and action skill duration, and my pets also deal critical hit damage of +75% with their first melee attack. All of those skills are maxed out. I feel like I need to rebuild my abilities and focus on something else – possibly the Hunter build. The Hunter build has Rakk Attack, which sends two Rakks to dive-bomb enemies, but I fear the Rakk’s will just dive-bomb into the floor since the Katagawa Ball is a floating/flying enemy.

I know my place within the Borderlands universe (for now) and I hate it. I am the Belle of the Ball and this boss just loves giving all of its attention to me. However, I cannot help but feel like I need to abandon this mission if possible and retool Fl4k for this fight, but there has to be a different way, at least I hope. I have $89 left in the game and that’s fast depleting to zero.

I have gotten further in beating it than I ever have, as I have been able to get nearly past its second health bar, but this enemy is tough to kill. It’s a million thorns in every area of my body and I just want to taste victory – that is all I want to do. In terms of builds, there is one other option: to focus on regaining health and taking as many shots to this thing as I can. My other issue is that even if I maxed out Fl4k’s self-repairing system, I will eventually run out of bullets. That has been my other biggest issue in this long painful fight.

Just as I gain the upper hand, I run out of bullets and have to use grenades (yes, there are refill canisters, but those run out quickly).

So from one gamer to another: Help! you have any tips or advice please let me know. I feel like I need to exit the mission and just level up a bunch before returning to send the Katagawa Ball to its special and rightful place in Hell. Since the game offers an online co-op feature, if you would like to join me on my quest to conquer the Borderlands and end Katagawa’s reign, I play on PlayStation and my gamer tag is mercwithonearm. Happy vault hunting!
