Blind Date: Home Loan Advisor Joa and Marine Technician Graeme bond over their hatred of dating apps

Graeme, 31, says:

I arrived a little bit early. I was slightly nervous and after a long, rough day, I was really hoping it was about to be turned around. My date arrived right on time. My first thought when I saw her was: Wow. She is stunning. We sat down and just started talking and from then on, there wasn’t a moment of silence.

Joa was born in Venezuela but has been in Australia since she was 12. We instantly found common ground talking about family – mine being Italian and Croatian. We shared so many similar opinions and views on things.

We bonded over our dislike for dating apps. We both prefer to meet people organically and get to know them face-to-face, rather than through messaging first.

We always had something to say to each other. There was never a dull moment during the date, it was so easy.

We just got along like a house on fire. I feel like as far as dates go, this went really well. The waitress even came over to the table when Joa was in the bathroom and commented on how she thought this wasn’t even a blind date, that it seemed as if we knew each other already.

I think we were both nervous coming into this experience, thinking about the “what ifs”. What if I don’t like this person? What if it’s really awkward? But it was really far from that. Joa was beautiful and very kind. I think we are very similar people who share the same values.

I applied for Blind Date and my thinking at the time was, what’s the worst that can happen? I’m really glad I did now.

We ended up staying at the restaurant for three hours and by the time we left they were shutting the bar, so I think that speaks for itself. I asked for her number, I made sure I got that one! And we have already planned to meet up at the beach for our second date.

Joa, 29, says:

My date was already there when I arrived. It was slightly awkward introducing yourself to someone you don’t know anything about — not even a name. Graeme made me feel instantly comfortable though, which was really nice.

My first impression of Graeme was that he seems like a very genuine person. He was very good-looking and he also looked like a good person if that makes sense.

We instantly bonded over our love for seafood, we are both obsessed with it. We also bonded over our hate for dating apps and how we would much rather walk into the unknown of a blind date than put ourselves through the torture of Tinder. I’ve found through my experience it’s pretty hard to meet someone genuine on the apps.

There was one particular awkward moment during our date. We were deep in conversation when I saw my phone ringing — it was my mum, so I thought I better pick up, just in case. It ended up being that she was just at the shops and wanted to show me something she was buying! She had no idea I was going on Blind Date so I had to subtly tell her, and that I’d talk to her later.

I didn’t look at my phone for the rest of the night until I noticed the staff were starting to pack away the furniture and checked the time. We had been there for about three hours!

At the end of the date, he walked me to my car and asked for my number and I gave it to him. He didn’t try to kiss me which I really appreciate to be honest. He was very respectful.

He ended up sending me a really sweet message afterwards saying he had a really good time and so did I. I’d like to see him again and I think we will catch up this Sunday and go to the beach.
