Blind Date: Business owners Freddy & Jamie-Lee hit it off, but can they dive deeper?

Freddy, 33, says:

I arrived for my date 30 minutes early. I had no idea what the traffic was going to be like on the freeway so I thought I better not risk it. I had a little walk around to kill some time, then followed my maps to our meeting spot. I looked up, thinking I was at the right spot and saw two big round eyes looking right at me… I was at the strip club, Penthouse, by accident. The woman at the door laughed and kindly showed me to the spot I was supposed to be at, Double Rainbow.

I was looking forward to a drink and couldn’t resist the waiter’s recommendation of the Hive cocktail — basically an espresso martini with rum and honeycomb. I can recommend, it was great. I sat back and waited for my date to arrive. The thought did cross my mind: What if I’ve been stood up? Wouldn’t be a bad thing with a $150 bar tab, right?

We had a good conversation covering a lot of different topics. Work, travel, family. We both have dogs, and shared some stories about them and their personalities. Jamie-Lee and I have pretty similar lifestyles, we are both self-employed and enjoy similar hobbies.

We ended up putting our faith in the chef’s recommendations as we are both open to trying new food and don’t have any dietary requirements — another plus!

It was my first drink since new year’s eve so I was mindful to stay under the limit, as I drove. I was also mindful of the fact I was climbing Bluff Knoll early in the morning so wasn’t intending on having a late night or kicking on. Once we finished up, we had gone over the $150 and Jamie-Lee offered to go halves which is a very genuine move, but I covered it.

We left the restaurant and happily exchanged numbers. I said I would find us something fun to do for the next date and she said she was keen on that.

Jamie-Lee, 33, says:

As soon as I arrived at the venue for my date, I was met by Freddy who made me feel welcome and comfortable straight away.

I loved his hair and general energy. He’s a pretty quirky guy and loves an adventure as much as I do, so we quickly found common ground.

Freddy took care of ordering the food, which was nice for me as I spend all day making decisions for my business, so I was able to sit back, relax and enjoy myself. The food and staff were amazing. They really made me feel comfortable and taken care of.

We bonded over our love of dogs. He has a staffy and I have a golden retriever, Trevor. We spoke a lot about the two of them and their funny personalities and quirks. Following that, we actually covered a lot of topics. Freddy had some great travel stories and an even better Tinder fail story from when he was in Amsterdam that was both funny and terrifying. We are both business owners and have big visions for the future, so it was nice to relate on that level. He is really into hiking and the outdoors so we share that passion for nature.

Freddy is very much into self-development, which is an important value to me. He is definitely someone that interests me in how his mind works. I like someone that is a little bit weird and has an edge.

During our date, we covered a lot of surface level stuff so I am interested in digging a little deeper and seeing where the conversation goes. I don’t feel like I really got to know him, if that makes sense. Curiosity definitely got the cat as we have agreed to meet up again for a second date.

I wanted to put myself out there this year so I applied for Blind Date and thought, let’s just see what happens!
