Aussies react to retailers scrapping glittery decorations this Christmas

Two major Australian retailers have sparked outrage after it was revealed they planned to scrap Christmas products which contain glitter in an effort to reduce their environmental impact.

Both Woolworths and Big W will no longer sell ornaments or Christmas objects with glitter on them.

In a statement, The Woolworths Group said glitter, made of microplastics, is toxic for the environment.

Typical decorations and Christmas products including wrapping paper and cards sold at either Woolworths or Big W won’t be covered in glitter, as the company attempts to reduce its impact on the environment.

Australians have turned to social media to share their reactions over the controversial move.

A few defended the retailers decision to help the environment.

“Why is everyone acting like there are no plastic alternatives?!,” one user wrote on Twitter.

“Can‘t believe all the complaining! The less glitter the better! That stuff gets everywhere!!,” said another.

“Hopefully they ban glitter all together!”“Every move away from microplastics is welcome,” a third said.

Others were not so impressed at the loss of their favourite kind of Christmas decorations.

“Pathetic. Next they’ll only sell cardboard Christmas trees and paper decorations and tell us to recycle them each year,” one user said.

Victorian MP Bernie Finn had some very choice words to add to the conversation.“ Woolworths and Big W can get stuffed this Christmas,” Mr Finn said.

A few people were confused about the decision given that the retailers still sell plenty of other plastic products.

“After enforcing billions of plastic masks be used. How very noble,” one user said.

“Like everything else in their stores isn’t covered in plastic,” another said.

Woolworths Group general manager of sustainability Liam Ward said the effort is a small but meaningful way customers can deliver Christmas cheer without harshly impacting the environment.

“We know there‘s more we can do and we’re working to reduce glitter across our entire range in Woolworths and Big W,” Mr Ward said.

“We‘re also making changes to reduce plastic in its many other forms, with both Woolworths and Big W removing reusable plastic shopping bags from check-outs nationwide by the end of June next year.”

Woolworths also announced its Christmas bonbons will also be sold with plastic-free prizes, in an attempt to be more sustainable.
