A popular Australian influencer has been caught in a social media storm after posting a video expressing shock at a small business’s high prices.
TikTok personality and influencer Sopha Dopha shared a video of her shopping haul from the Sydney Finders Keepers market – specifically, a small two-handled ceramic mug.
In the video, she did not name the business.
“I was at this market, the Finders Keepers market – I thought (the mug) just had one handle, and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s such a cute mug, I’m just going to get it’,” Dopha said in her video.
“Didn’t ask how much it was. I f**king look at the EFTPOS machine … $125.”
She went on to express her incredulity at the price of the mug in relation to its size but said she felt it was too late to change her mind and she “would have felt really bad” if she had cancelled the purchase.
“So I just got it, but now I’m like, ‘Oh f**k, who do I give this to’?” she said.
The owner of the small business, Shelby Sherritt, uploaded her own video in response to Dopha’s.
“I have literally spent hours and hours finessing, glazing, I hand paint every single one, and that’s not including how much money goes towards tax,” Ms Sherritt said.
“It’s also deeply upsetting to have someone not only question you as a business owner but to also have you question my pricing when you, too, also run a small business and you know how much goes into every single little thing that small business does.”
Ms Sherritt said she explained to Dopha when she visited the stall that she was allowed to handle the mugs, look for prices and inspect the stock without any pressure to buy anything.
“I get it, times are tough right now – I don’t want to put you in a financial situation, I want to have a living wage and I want to support my workers,” she said.
“I watched you pick things up and look at the prices – I showed you and I even told you the price of them.”
A full refund was offered to Dopha in the video if she returned the mug.
Sopha then clapped back in her own response video and said she was “so confused”.
“This is my experience: I remember going to the Finders Keepers market, looking at this stall, I stood in the line (for the shop) and I waited,” she said.
“On my mum’s life, I did not touch any items.”
She said she looked at all the items and saw the mug in question and decided to buy it because “it was cute”.
“I didn’t realise, I didn’t know the price until I tapped my card,” Dopha said.
“In my personal opinion, I thought ‘whoa’ – I didn’t expect it to be that much for a little mug.
“I never said anything in the video that the price wasn’t worth it, that it wasn’t deserving of that price – it was a little comment about how I didn’t know it was that much money.”
