10 Things To Know About The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon

More than a hotel group, EDITION, wherever its location, is a hotspot for culture and the cultured; there’s a carefully considered amalgamation of sophistication, fun, and elevated service that comes together for a unique hospitality experience that’s tailored to its specific location. And now, the group has made its debut in Tokyo.

Conveniently located in Toranomon, downtown Japan, the hotel’s situation is ideal—close enough to the central districts and attractions for exploring but distanced enough to switch off and relax. Here, there’s a merging of traditional Japanese codes of serene, refined minimalism with EDITION’s style, charisma and dynamic energy, and what an alluring mix that is.

It’s also home to the best of the best—first off, it was designed in partnership with revered architect Kengo Kumacue, and within, the hotel’s signature restaurant, The Jade Room + Garden Terrace, is brought to you by British Michelin-starred chef, Tom Aikens. Alongside this are the Blue Room restaurant, a lobby lounge and bar, and the Gold Bar on the ground floor. As for the rooms, expect 206 guest rooms (some feature terraces, a first of its kind in the city) and 22 one-bedroom suites that don skyline views that include the Tokyo Tower and the bay; a spa with six treatments rooms, state-of-the-art gym, pool, as well as event and meeting studios. A hotly tipped hotel for locals and visitors alike, Anshul Kaul, the Managing Director of the Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon, tells us more about the group’s debut Asia outpost.

The Jade Room + Garden Terrace by Tom Aikens

World-renowned, award-winning Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens has recently opened The Jade Room + Garden Terrace within the hotel. It is set on the 31st floor and is the hotel’s signature restaurant. The fresh and innovative fusion menu balances contemporary Japanese with Western-influenced dishes that have been designed for locals and travelers alike—plus, it offers magnificent views of Tokyo.

Christmas tree reveal

Since its opening in 2020, the hotel has worked with some of the city’s hottest artists and designers to create its annual Christmas tree that takes up residence in the lobby. Last year, famed Japanese fashion designer Tomo Koizumi made a wearable dress. This year, the hotel boasts its Neon Christmas Tree in collaboration with Gokou Neon Studio for a limited period until 25th December.

Architecture and design

The talents of Ian Schrager and Kengo Kuma created a unique and original identity. Ian Schrager’s artistic vision, alongside his love for Japanese culture and architecture, perfectly complimented famed Japanese architect Kuma Kengo san’s design aesthetic.

Interiors from the lobby to the hotel’s public spaces

The lobby and public spaces were inspired by the structure, purpose and organization of Buddhist temples. These temples consisted of a central courtyard surrounded by various other forms, each with its specific purpose. This central courtyard was used for ceremonies, gatherings, communal prayer and, in general, for people to come together, interact, congregate and create a community. It was a truly communal space and experience.

Views and terraces

Most rooms have uninterrupted views of Tokyo’s iconic structures, such as The Tokyo Tower and the Rainbow Bridge. Some of the rooms are designed with significantly large terraces, an absolute luxury in Tokyo. These terraces allow guests to bask in the first rays of the sun in the land of the rising sun.

Sustainable and responsible operations

We look to operate sustainably, and this can be seen in the bulk refillable wet amenities in rooms to locally sourced, plastic-free minibars and waters. Furthermore, the hotel’s ‘go local’ approach encourages guests to explore the delicious cuisine of Japan.

Cocktail culture

The authentic cocktail culture of The Tokyo EDITION Toranomon is evident throughout the hotel experience. For example, the Gold Bar is inspired by the pre-prohibition era, and the bottled cocktail service in The Jade Room reinforces this. The Lobby Bar focuses on the seasonality of cocktails, allowing us to celebrate the best of locally sourced spirits and Zero Proof Cocktails.

Artworks

The art that is displayed throughout the hotel is by local Japanese artists. These pieces range in their artistic representation, including hope/philosophical meditation and the depths of people’s lives and lifestyles beneath their social roles from the 1970s. Highlights include ‘Two Birds’ by Mariko Mori, ‘How High The Moon’ by Shiro Kuramata and ‘The Engaging Photography wall’ by Watanabe san.

The impassioned concierge has the ‘in’ for every speakeasy experience in town

Ai Watanabe is known for opening the doors to the impossible, whether it be getting you seats in the most sought-after Japanese restaurants, bars or shows or delightfully enlightening one about the local customs, cultures/rituals and secrets.
